While many cultural assumptions about gender difference may be prejudices generated by past patriarchal practices that once served communal needs that are no longer as pressing, some are nevertheless real: men and women have different bodies and differ in regard to such things as susceptibility to cardiovascular illness. Moreover, the culture of gender difference has bodily effects. Cultural practices such as exclusion can affect people physically. For example, women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. Why? The answer may reside in biological differences, but the difference may also be the result of cultural pressures – in this case, exclusion from fulfilled lives of the kind much more easily available to men in a society still operating with many patriarchal assumptions intact. Envy, anger, and resentment make us pay a second time for the traits that gain us exclusion from social resources and rewards.
